Wake up, “We the South”! The Plant-based, Meatless Revolution is Here!

“We the North” vs. “We the South”?

“We the North” became the rallying cry across all of Canada since 2014, and on June 13, its Toronto Raptors became the first non-U.S. franchise to win a National Basketball Association championship.

 

Now, “We the South” - i.e., the U.S.’s sickest, least formally educated and most obese states - should be fast-breaking to the forefront of this nation’s latest crusade: the plant-based, meatless revolution.

 

CNN Business, 5-3-19: “The plant-based protein trend is growing more rapidly than most people anticipated. Just this week: 

  • Beyond Meat, which makes meatless alternatives to beef, pork and poultry, went public;

  • Its main competitor, Impossible Foods, reported that demand is so high it's causing a shortage; 

  • Burger King announced plans to roll out an Impossible burger nationally; and 

  • Ikea said it's developing a new meatless meatball designed to taste like animal meat.

Currently, fence-straddling Tyson Foods, #1 U.S. meat processor and former Beyond Meat early investor, this fall will introduce “Raised & Rooted,” a half-pea-protein/half-Angus-beef hybrid burger.

 

Wall Street Journal, 6-4-19, front page: “Fast-food restaurants are rushing to add meat-free burgers to their menus, hoping these higher-priced alternatives will help them capture additional traffic and dollars even as suppliers have struggled to fill all the orders.

  • Imitation meats made by Beyond Meat Inc. and Impossible Foods Inc. are on sale at nearly 20,000 restaurants across the U.S., according to those companies. 

  • Fifteen percent of U.S. restaurants offered meatless burgers in March, according to a Technomic Inc. study of menus from 6,000 operators, with the number serving them up 3% from a year earlier. 

  • Restaurants’ embrace of vegetarian-friendly fare reflects competition among fast-food chains to attract younger diners who prioritize sustainability and healthfulness.

Bloomberg News’ Deena Shanker: “There are two main drivers right now: 

  1. Everyone’s looking now to eat healthier, . . . and

  2. A lot of young people now are looking to reduce their carbon footprint. . . . Since meat production is a major driver of climate change, eating less meat is one way to do that.”

A “We the South” Marshall Plan?

Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee claim the nation’s:

  • Highest rates of preventable deaths;

  • Highest obesity, stroke, diabetes levels;

  • Lowest education, life expectancy levels; and

  • Highest consumption of meats, fried foods and fewer vegetables!

“Meat” from the Founder of Alabama’s/HBCU’s only Meat-free Campus . . .

Huntsville’s Oakwood University stands as the only meat-/tobacco-/alcohol-free school in not only Alabama, but for all the 107 historically Black colleges and universities nationwide. 

 

In her 1905 book The Ministry of Healing Mrs. Ellen G. White, the 1896 founder of then-Oakwood Industrial School wrote: “In order to know what are the best foods, we must study God's original plan for man's diet. Grains, fruits, nuts and vegetables . . . prepared in as simple and natural a manner as possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect that are not afforded by a more complex diet.”

 

The time is now (past due, actually) for us Southerners to shake off our negative life-threatening “legacies” of obesity, low learning levels and inevitably preventable deaths, and now embrace voluntarily healthier lifestyle management tools, such as plant-based meatless meals.
